Cannabis and Sex: Helping Women To Orgasm

Written by Lydia Kariuki

While over 90% of men orgasm during sex, the figure is roughly around 50% for women. This clearly illustrates a wide “orgasms gap” that exists between the two genders, and one that surely needs to be addressed. Interestingly, a new study seems to suggest that cannabis can remedy this situation.

Details of the Study

Researchers from East Carolina University conducted a survey to investigate the influence of weed on sexual functioning and satisfaction. They recruited participants from social media and medical and legal cannabis advocacy groups. The participants were aged between 18 to 85 years and had used cannabis prior to the survey. 78% were white, 64% female, 80% were college-educated, 73% were in monogamous relationships, and 23% were from the LGBTQI community.

The respondents were asked questions regarding the effects of cannabis on different aspects of sexual arousal and satisfaction, both physiological and psychological.

The study found that both men and women experienced greater arousal and orgasm intensity after using cannabis; with more women experiencing multiple orgasms.

“Women may be more likely to orgasm when using cannabis before sexual encounters, which could contribute to equity in the amount of sexual pleasure and satisfaction experienced by both women and men,” the study found.

While marijuana use has in the past been linked to erectile problems for men, this survey did not highlight this as an issue. If anything, males in this study seemed to have greater ability to achieve and maintain an erection while on cannabis. The researchers however noted that the self-reported nature of the survey could have prevented most men from acknowledging such a problem. The most intriguing finding from the study was the correlation between cannabis use and female orgasms.

Why is Orgasm a Challenge For Most Women?

Traditionally, women have been “forbidden” from acknowledging sexual desire, let alone enjoying the act. In short, the mind could be the greatest hindrance preventing most women from achieving the big “O.” The relaxing effects of cannabis may help to reduce inhibitions and hence allow more women to attain the highest level of sexual pleasure.

“Those who use cannabis report being more relaxed, whether mental or physical, which would improve overall sexual functioning and pleasure,” the researchers concluded.
