Innovative Mobile Cannabis Study in Colorado will observe participants using the state-of-the-art CUChange Mobile Pharmacology Laboratory
BOULDER, Colo. (March 18, 2021) – Wana Brands, North America’s No. 1 cannabis-infused edibles brand, has joined with Native Roots Cannabis Co., one of Colorado’s largest cannabis retailers, to provide support for cannabis research projects being conducted by the CUChange Cannabis Research team of The Center for Health and Neuroscience, Genes and Environment at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
The relationship will span a two-year period and will support ongoing studies at CUChange designed to observe the behavioral and health impacts of cannabis use across various forms of cannabis. Subjects will include cannabis consumers of various frequencies, as well as those who consume for recreational and/or medical purposes, including to relieve anxiety. The mission of CUChange is to conduct transdisciplinary research to explore the psychological, neurocognitive, physiological, genetic, and epigenetic factors that are linked with health and risk behavior.
“We couldn’t be prouder that CU approached us to support this multi-year project that will dive deeper into our understanding of products in Colorado’s cannabis market,” said Jonathan Boord, CEO of Native Roots. “We strongly believe in the value of research to help adult consumers and medical cannabis patients make the best decisions for their own health and wellbeing. We are grateful for the opportunity to support CU’s research, and subsequently the cannabis industry and our collective Colorado community to better understand the impacts of cannabis.”
As one of the most successful cannabis retailers in Colorado, Native Roots has a strong history of corporate social responsibility across the state. The company’s commitment comes in the form of volunteer hours, dollars donated, and professional skills applied to support community challenges. The partnership with Wana Brands on the CUChange research study is just the latest example of an ongoing partnership between the two leading cannabis brands, and the cannabis industry’s greater commitment to being a proactive and beneficial community partner.
“Data and research about cannabis and the cannabis consumer is what drives every product decision we make at Wana Brands,” said Nancy Whiteman, CEO of Wana Brands. “Therefore, we are always interested in helping advance this knowledge through initiatives such as this unique and compelling study. Wana is committed to working with researchers, nonprofits, civic leaders and policymakers to identify how cannabis products and medicine can best serve the entire community.”
The study will be conducted via the CUChange Mobile Pharmacology Laboratory, which enables researchers to collect blood immediately before and after a participant finishes using their cannabis in their own home, while also collecting self-report, interview, and neurobehavioral measures without any delay and with a minimum of inconvenience to participants. Operating out of CU Boulder’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and the Institute of Cognitive Science, the CUChange Mobile Pharmacology Laboratory has been modified specifically for the purpose of studying the use of cannabis.
“In order to obtain the broadest and most comprehensive set of data, we include a wide range of types of state market cannabis products in this extensive study,” said Dr. L. Cinnamon Bidwell, Co-Director and Lead Research at CU Change. “We are extremely grateful that organizations like Native Roots and Wana Brands stepped in to help when they saw this need. As most everyone knows, cannabis research is severely limited due to cannabis’ federal status and is still decades behind where it should be. With more states moving toward legalization, it is even more important that we learn everything we can about how cannabis, as it is sold in legal markets, impacts the human body.”
Participants for the studies will be selected using careful methods to ensure their health and safety as well as integrity of the data. Although final data from the study won’t be available until completion of all phases, anecdotal findings may be shared when available, according to the researchers.
