Groundbreaking Cannabis Profiling Technology Allows for Biomimicry, Proven Consistency, Quality, and Predictable Effects for Brands Seeking Exclusive Custom Formulations

IRVINE – May 20, 2020 – ABSTRAX, a leader in the research and production of botanical and cannabis-derived terpenes, announces its advanced cannabis analytical testing program and custom [cultivar] specific terpene formulations for leading and emerging cannabis brands. Its proprietary [cultivar] profiling technology, including 3D Metabolite Fingerprint™ and custom formulation system, allows for unparalleled cannabis analytics to harness the power of the plant and create unmatched terpene formulations. This advancement in cannabis science enables ABSTRAX to create functional [cultivar] specific cannabis product formulations that build consumer trust achieved by a scientific approach needed to create predictable and repeatable experiences that can further enhance brand power.

“We’re now able to study the most popular genetics to formulate ‘Designer Highs’ for brands looking to offer their customers all-natural, terpene-driven sensorial experiences that they will never forget,” says Max Koby, Founding Partner and Chief Executive Officer of ABSTRAX. “And the beauty is that these experiences produced by cannabis can now be replicated and steered by non-cannabis, botanically-derived terpenes and aroma compounds that are completely identical, THC-free and can be shipped and enjoyed nearly anywhere in the world.”

ABSTRAX has made this possible after years of partnership with some of the best cultivation partners and brands, including Jack Herer, Sherbinski, and JoshD to analyze and authenticate iconic cannabis [cultivar]s. The company has quantified over 400 terpenes and aroma compounds that provide the unique attributes of each chemovar. ABSTRAX has focused their R&D program on discovering and researching new and novel compounds that create distinct flavors, aromas, and contribute to the well-documented effects of popular cannabis [cultivar]s including The Original Jack Herer, OG’s, and Gelato.

“What makes our research so unique is that we identify and quantify these valuable compounds and then re-create cannabis profiles by developing scientifically based, unparalleled testing standards incorporated with a sensory panel comprised of industry experts to capture each cannabis essence and aroma,” says Kevin Koby, Chief Science Officer of ABSTRAX.

For example, during analysis via two-dimensional gas chromatography (2DGC), flower samples of The Original Jack Herer displayed prolific saturation of Cis-β-Ocimene, β-Phellandrene, and α-Phellandrene. As these compounds rarely appear among the forerunners of any [cultivar]’s fragrant fingerprint this makes the real Jack Herer profile very unique. The expressed combination may help explain the [cultivar]’s rise to the flagship position it occupies today. Renowned as one of the tried-and-true standards by which other cannabinoid variants are measured, this unique terpene concentration results in a flavor profile as articulate as the cherished individual from which it derives its name. The Original Jack Herer possesses a feeling and smell almost impossible to realize outside of the [cultivar] itself. Therein, the result is a traditionally celebrated pinewood rush, overlaid with spiced notes of citrus and hints of fruit on the backend. Certain volatile aromatic compounds are difficult to separate and measure under 2D. This is usually due to structural or characteristic similarities.

“Fortunately, moving to a three-dimensional model allows for easy differentiation. This approach identified one of the largest portions of Jack Herer’s profile as belonging to the uncommon ß-Phellandrene – massive relative to other [cultivar]s. This concentration, and several other extraordinary terpene gatherings give The Original Jack Herer that distinctive taste and experience that many strive to replicate,” says Dr. Iain Oswald, Lead Research Scientist of ABSTRAX.

As Dan Herer of The Original Jack Herer brand states, “This partnership has allowed us to truly capture and standardize The Original Jack Herer profile and now we are able to license the only original and authentic terpene formula to manufacturers for all to enjoy.”

“Our 3D metabolite fingerprint™ technology and proprietary formulation system is a complete game-changer. We can now work with licensed cultivators and brands to procure original genetics along with the freshest samples to develop botanical formulations that are [cultivar] specific, authentic, and unwaveringly consistent. Now consumers don’t have to question how a particular [cultivar] or product will affect their minds and bodies. We are able to drill down the specifics of each [cultivar]’s unique attributes and reproduce predictable experiences and repeatable results that build consumer trust,” says Koby.

This technology comes at a time in which cannabis scientists around the world are chasing “the perfect high” and seeking to create more effective, predictable and reliable product experiences. This has been a difficult code to crack because cannabis is an extremely complex plant and scientists are consistently finding that terpenes play a major role in the overall effects of cannabinoids.

ABSTRAX has started a research initiative to further elucidate how the entourage effect works and seeks to prove the benefits of terpenes in different combinations. We have partnered with Dr. Josh Kaplan from Western Washington University to study the effects of combining both major and minor terpenoids common in cannabis to further support the entourage theory in search of the perfect high.

“We’re at a fascinating time, as we’re now able to use lab generated data like never before to certifiably know what consumers desire and which combinations of compounds can be counted on to give them what they want. This is what sets us apart from our competitors, as we live and breathe a powerful combination of data, science, innovation, and safety-driven procedures that the brands we work with can count on,” says Koby.

In an effort to provide its customers valuable intellectual property, customized products and services, ABSTRAX’s R&D and custom formulation program offers the following features, checks and balances:

  • ABSTRAX’s cannabis [cultivar] analysis is the most advanced and comprehensive method to achieve biomimicry of each cannabis variety and build valuable IP for brands.
  • Its R&D team includes PhD research scientists, analytical chemists, formulation chemists, and cannabis connoisseurs working together to discover the nuances of cannabis and create the most authentic, [cultivar]-specific formulations available.
  • Once new compounds are discovered, ABSTRAX takes a deeper dive into researching their potential benefits and applications.
  • All ingredients are sourced from botanical and naturally derived sources, unless unavailable and approved by a customer.
  • ABSTRAX continually sources hundreds of natural isolates for its formulations and is always seeking new sources for the rare compounds its team discovers.
  • All incoming materials, isolates, and blends are subject to strict compliance standards, and GC purity and residual solvent analysis.
  • ABSTRAX maintains ingredient standardization including GC analysis and molecular distillation of natural raw materials to increase purity and consistency.
  • ABSTRAX provides a COA and compliance package for all products and full lot traceability.

ABSTRAX is already working with a select number of brands including Sherbinskis, Jack Herer, and JoshD developing custom formulations that are exclusive and can be used to help license their proprietary genetics and formulations across state boundaries. Its custom formulation program is expected to grow exponentially as it is now opening up to the food and beverage and cannabis industries at large.

“As we work to grow our custom formulation program, we’re confident that our work with leading universities, researchers, and our state-of-the-art laboratory will play a pivotal role in forever changing the way humanity interacts with cannabis aroma compounds, flavors, and the desired effects. Whether a customer is seeking greater relaxation, more laughter, a burst of energy, or other effects from the products they use, we understand that they are ultimately buying experiences, and we’re here to support the brands that serve them,” says Koby.
